As days, weeks, and months pull us into stormy waters, deep currents, and a sea of unexpected life experiences, our spiritual compass can feel as though it has lost its direction. This disorientation doesn’t happen because God’s guidance is flawed, but because we often lose sight of the only Way that leads us safely to our destination.

God has given us the ability to rise above the chaos — to soar on wings like eagles — yet we still struggle to navigate these seas of confusion. We are reminded in Isaiah 40:31,

“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”

Uninvited Fear

In life, we constantly navigate through seas of conflicts, with problems knocking at our doors uninvited. At times, we find ourselves asking, “What about today? Anything else?” We are never prepared for the “unexpected,” regardless of how much “in control” we may think we are. Instead of “being vigilant” and trusting our Lord, we overwhelm ourselves with never-ending “emergency plans.”

What about today? Can you apply the faithful Word of God to whatever shows up today? This is not a passive suggestion but an active decision: a conscious choice to shift our focus from the overwhelming source of our fear to the unwavering nature of our God. The Lord encourages us in Proverbs 3:5–6 to:

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

Citizens of a Different Kingdom

We are told we are not of this world; we are kingdom people. Yet, too often, we fail to differentiate our identity, Christ’s finished work, and our future hope from the noise of a fast-changing culture. When the waves grow high, I am reminded of Jesus’ honest preparation for His disciples. He did not promise an easy path, but He did promise a certain victory. He told them:

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)

Even as we witness the “kingdom of darkness” seemingly exerting its influence, we must remember that a dark world cannot produce light. It may present itself as the “real power,” overshadowing our God-given assurances, but it is a facade. In our fallen human nature, we cannot keep up with this rapid and chaotic shift.

More Than Conquerors

However, the gospel changes the narrative. To say we are not conquerors through Christ is to deny the very power of the One we follow. Despite the cruel polarization in our society that leads many people astray — shifting their trust from being Christ-centered to world-centered — the truth of Romans 8:28 remains our anchor:

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

Our affections, our faithfulness, and our trust must be rooted in the unwavering belief that God always fulfills His promises. Our faith stands as an anchor against the shifting tides of doubt and despair. This certainty is not based on wishful thinking but on the consistent, historical, and deeply personal evidence of His faithfulness throughout time. Because of His profound, steadfast, and unconditional love for us — a love demonstrated most fully through the sacrifice of His Son — we are never truly defeated.

Though we may face trials, setbacks, and moments of intense struggle — periods where the light seems dim and the path ahead is obscured — these circumstances are temporary skirmishes, not the final outcome. The assurance of God’s love and the certainty of His promised victory mean that no enemy, no illness, no heartbreak, and no failure has the ultimate power to claim our souls or define our destiny.

Our lives are secure in Him, making every challenge we overcome a testament to His enduring power, and every moment of peace a gift from His boundless grace. We are not defined by our struggles, but by the One who loves us and who has promised us victory. As Paul later affirms in Romans 8:37, “In all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.”

A Call to Unity

If Christ is truly our Lord, King, Priest, and Prophet, we are never truly lost. Let us stop drifting with the currents of culture and instead move together, anchored by the truth, with one mind in Christ.
